1. Gather all of the silicone shapes and sizes.
The first thing I discovered was that there are several different kinds of silicone molds available in various shapes and sizes for every occasion. Really, seeing silicone molds in practically every form imaginable blew my mind! They’ve created whatever you can think of.

2. Confirm that your silicone bakeware is indeed silicone.
When purchasing your first silicone pans, it might be difficult to discern if you are purchasing the correct one. Silicone molds are constructed of silicone rubber, which is readily combined with regular plastic or other hazardous components.

- Rinse out your molds with soap and cold water (Make sure that you don’t scrub the mold with a rough sponge because it will ruin the integrity of the silicone)
- Let the mold dry
- Cover the entire mold with a thin layer of oil
- Preheat the oven and put the empty mold inside for 10-15 minutes
- Take the mold out and check for the presence of a bad smell
- Rinse out the oil and let it dry once more
This silicone mold has now been thoroughly cleansed of any production chemicals and is ready to bake an amazing dessert.
4. Continue to bake desserts in your silicone molds.
Baking with a silicone pan is a lot of fun to experiment with. With all of different forms and sizes available, a baker’s creativity may run wild. But, after testing with a variety of meals, I’ve concluded that silicone molds are far better suited for baking sweet sweets than for baking food.
When baking a chicken pot pie in my silicone form, the contents within caused the pie shell to get fully wet. The silicone substance provides a stew-like environment for the chicken pot pie contents, causing them to mush and turning the dough surrounding it mushy instead of a lovely crispy crust.
This was quite disheartening to learn since I tried baking it multiple times with the same results. Stick to preparing sweets in your silicone bakeware rather than food and appreciate the sweet-tasting masterpieces that result from baking a dessert in a silicone mold.
5. Before putting the silicone mold in the oven, surround it with something sturdy.
When you begin making your batter, bear in mind that the silicone mold should be supported up against something to prevent drooping.
The benefit of using a silicone pan over a metal pan is that you can produce a variety of cakes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Metal bakeware does not usually match the shapes of silicone pans.
As you pour batter into a silicone mold, the borders of the mold tend to expand, causing the mold to stretch. This is more common in big silicone molds than tiny ones because there is more unsupported surface area.
There are several techniques to support your huge silicone molds:
- If you’re using a flat silicone mold such as a bread pan or pie pan, put your mold on a metal sheet pan. Roll up a few large balls of aluminum foil and put them around the silicone mold. Do so until you’re sure that the silicone mold won’t droop when pouring in the batter.
- If you’re using a round silicone mold such as a bundt pan, you’ll need to use a large cooking pot to support your round mold. Make sure you pick the right sized pot and put your bundt pan inside. Not only will it keep the sides of the pan from drooping, but it’ll also help make your cake longer. After pouring in the batter, the pan will stretch downward and create a tall beautiful cake from it.
Check that the handles of your pots do not melt!
Make sure the pot is large enough so that the mold does not fall in with the thick batter!
Whichever mold you choose, keep in mind that the silicone flat molds need a metal sheet pan below them. Do not place silicone molds on an empty oven rack.
*Never allow the edges of your silicone molds to contact the oven walls!
6. Properly Grease Silicone Pans for Easy Cleaning
Most pans must be well greased before they can be filled with batter. Silicone pans, on the other hand, are not like other pans. These are designed to stand out from your average pan. Most silicone molds are nonstick because they are intended to quickly remove baked products from inside the form.
Baking pans are greased for a variety of purposes, including:
- Easy removal from the pan
- Prevent burning of the outside of your baked good
- Prevent the breaking and sticking of the batter
- Easy cleanup once finished
The only thing I would suggest with silicone pans is that you brush a little coating of cooking spray down the interior of your mold to guarantee the efficiency of the famous nonstick silicone pan. This will target all four of the bullet points described above with half the effort of a regular pan.
7. Utilizing the Proper Temperature for Your Silicone Bakeware
On both ends of the temperature range, each kind of silicone mold has its own manufacturer-recommended temperature limit. These temperature limitations should be printed on the top of each mold’s package.
Silicone molds can often tolerate temperatures ranging from -40 to 446 degrees Fahrenheit.
When initially beginning to bake with these elastic molds, keep in mind that the silicone pans must be used at the correct temperature. Silicone molds absorb far less heat than ordinary pans, causing your delicacies to bake at a much slower pace.
Knowing this, you may reflexively increase the temperature of your oven. Although this seems to be a smart idea, in principle, waiting through your baking time at the prescribed temperature is a better option. This ensures that you get the full advantages of not scorching the crust of your baked items as you would in a standard pan.
I suggest having a match or a wooden toothpick with you to poke and tug on your creation from time to time. If the batter adheres to your utensil, your masterpiece is not yet finished. If the utensil comes out clean and smooth, your baked product is done and ready to be removed from the oven.
*Always avoid exposing silicone to open flame sources. They will melt!
8. Let Silicone Pans to Cool After Baking
Remove the silicone mold from the oven and from the metal pan or pot that you’ve set it on (don’t forget to wear your oven mitts!). Let at least 10 minutes for the pan to cool before removing the silicone mold. This lowers the temperature of the silicone, allowing the cooked batter to completely unstick from the pan.
Once I remove the silicone pan from the oven, I normally lay a moist cloth below it. When I’m in a rush to serve my baked goods, I’ll do this. The pan cools significantly quicker, allowing me to proceed to the next stage of removing the silicone off your work of art!
9. Gently peel your silicone bakeware
Peeling your silicone mold may seem to be a simple operation, but depending on the form you choose to bake in, it may rapidly become a significant issue. I would suggest using this easy 4 step approach to thoroughly remove your baked goods:
- Avoid banging your silicone pan on your countertop – This will possibly make your cake collapse on itself.
- Pinch and pull each side of the stretchy silicone pan away from the middle – Make sure to do this a few times to fully separate each silicone shape that you might be baking in.
- Place your thumbs on the bottom of the silicone mold and your fingers at the top to quickly invert the silicone mold – If you’ve baked large cakes, invert the mold inside out on to a plate and if you’ve baked some muffins, repeat the same process but this time grab the baked good from the bottom as the mold inverts.
- If the dessert is still stuck, try repeating step 2 more thoroughly before moving on to step 3.
I like presenting my baked products to my visitors using the inverted silicone mold. On a table overloaded with other sweets, having my delicacies pushed up in the air with the inverted mold looks particularly good. Cleaning the molds is simple after they’ve been inverted. This leads me to discuss the usage of silicone in home appliances.
10. Put your silicone molds to use with a variety of kitchen appliances.
Most silicone bakeware is dishwasher safe, making silicone cleaning a breeze. Just place your inverted silicone mold on the top level of your dishwasher and it will be properly cleaned. But, bear in mind that not all molds will remain inverted. Only large molds, in my experience, can remain inverted for an extended period of time.
For cleaning tiny molds such as muffin pans and cupcake pans, I normally immerse the mold in cold water to remove any extra crumbs before putting it upside down in the dishwasher’s top rack.
Note that silicone molds are very adaptable and may be used for practically any occasion. As a result, it is compatible with practically all kitchen equipment. The following appliances are ideal for use with silicone bakeware:
- Toaster oven
Because of their versatility, silicone molds inspired me to use these tools to create some of the tastiest desserts I’ve ever cooked. These are the greatest pans I’ve ever worked with!
11. Prepare Frozen Desserts
Typical freezers have temperatures ranging from 0 to almost -18 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures are ideal for silicone molds, which are designed to withstand temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Knowing this, I decided to create some fantastic frozen delights using these molds.
Beginning with everyone’s favorite dessert. I cooked some pudding using a silicone muffin pan as a vessel. I poured the pudding into the pan and refrigerated it for approximately 2 hours after it was finished (or freezer for 20 minutes). This resulted in a delicious cold pudding for everyone to enjoy.
Insert a couple Popsicle sticks into each pudding crevice. Keep it in the freezer for a few minutes longer and you’ll have a delicious frozen pudding popsicle.
I’ve also prepared some jello using the same fridge approach. It turned out just as nice as the pudding version of this dish.
Remember to be imaginative! Try with a variety of recipes. I produced football-shaped ice cubes using the silicone mold the other day and placed them in our Superbowl beverages. My spouse felt it was really imaginative!
12. They’re Not Only for Baking
When I first introduced silicone bakeware a few years ago, it has become a kitchen staple in my home. I’ve discovered that silicone bakeware offers a variety of helpful properties in a baker’s kitchen.
In kneading dough, I’ve discovered that a silicone mat may be used to separate the dough from the tabletop, as well as another silicone mat to separate the dough from the roller itself. Since I didn’t have to continually remove the dough off the tabletop or the roller, this saved me a lot of time when creating my dough.
Lay Out Dough Using the Silicone Mat as a Foundation!
I’ve also reused the silicone molds as serving cups. After baking my cupcakes, I fill the empty cupcake molds with various varieties of nuts and edible treats. The various hues of the silicone molds will brighten up your table after you’ve served your sweets!
13. For fresh bakeware, store silicone molds in zip lock bags.
Silicone is a substance that, if exposed to air for an extended period of time, may begin to feel strange. After purchasing a variety of molds, I found myself utilizing some more than others. My blunder was leaving the silicone molds I didn’t use out in the open for too long.
When silicone is exposed to air for an extended period of time, it gets dusty and sticky. This may rapidly become a problem since removing the stickiness from the silicone is difficult.
After ensuring that your silicone bakeware is completely dry, I recommend covering it with a plastic bag or a ziplock bag.
Be Certain That The Silicone Is Placed In An Airtight Bag!
This will be ideal since silicone molds stack really neatly and are very simple to store. Stacking all of your silicone bakeware can save you so much space while working in a small kitchen while still allowing you to enjoy every second of it!
14. Be Artistic With Your Silicone Mold Baking!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: try to be creative with your silicone molds. I understand that this is easier said than done (speaking from experience). Here are some baking ideas that I’ve tried using silicone molds:
- Using your silicone muffin pan, spread lines of melted chocolate inside the pan. Let the chocolate harden either in the fridge or not and invert the pan to take out the hardened chocolate. You can decorate an ice cream dessert with these chocolate lines.
- Using your silicone muffin pan, you can also spread melted chocolate by lining the inside of each muffin mold. Let the chocolate harden either in the fridge or not and invert the pan carefully not to break the chocolate cup. You can fill each chocolate cup with ice cream or other types of desserts and serve it.
There are hundreds of different recipes that can be baked in silicone molds. Beginning with chocolate brownies and cheesecakes and on to chocolate mouse. You can even mix a few of cake forms to create a stunning cake tower!
If you want to make something that isn’t linked to baking. Consider creating your own soap or even crayons. Try everything that comes to mind and you’ll discover for yourself the limitless possibilities that silicone molds provide!
